Dear Chris,
I am writing to invite you to pay a visit to a local folk culture village with us next Saturday.
As scheduled, we'll meet at the school gate at 8:00 a.m. and go there by bus half an hour later.
After arriving at the village, we will first have a taste of some delicious local dishes. Best of all,
we can learn to make some local snacks like spring rolls! Over lunch, we will watch glove
puppetry, a famous folk performance. Then we can enjoy the sight of the typical buildings with
strong Southern Fujian characteristics. I believe it will be a great chance for you to explore the
traditional folk culture.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you are available. We are all looking
forward to your coming.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

M: Good morning, madam. It’s my first time to borrow books here. Could you help me?
W: Sure. Do you have a library card?
M: Yeah. Here it is. How many books can I borrow at a time?
W: Up to 5 books. But newspapers can’t be taken out.
M: How long may I keep a book?
W: At most two weeks.
M: Mm, when does the library close?
W: It closes at 9 pm from Monday to Saturday, but half an hour earlier on Sunday.
M: All right. By the way, could you suggest some good books?
W: What type of books are you interested in? Novels are on the second floor. Science books, the
first floor.
M: Well, I’d like to read some journals.
W: Err…Let me check. Ah, they are on the third floor.
M: I see. Thank you very much!
W: You are welcome.

W: Honey, have you all packed?
M: Almost ready. I’m making a double check.
W: It is cold on the mountain. Have you packed enough warm clothes?
M: Of course. And I have also packed two umbrellas.
W: That’s not necessary. The weather forecast says there’s no sign of rain for this weekend.
M: Perfect! Do you think our tent will be working well?
W: Of course. I just bought it last year.
M: What about our mobile phones and cameras? Did you charge them last night?
W: Yes, I did. Don’t worry.
M: Good. We should tell our neighbors that they can call the police if something happens.
W: You’re so thoughtful!
Text 3
M: Hi, Jane. Those new shoes look good on you!
W: Thank you, Carl. These are my dancing shoes. I’m taking dancing classes.
M: What kind of dance are you learning?
W: I’m learning ballet, modern, and tap.
M: Which one is your favorite?
W: Tap dance! It’s cool.
M: Is dancing difficult?
W: Hmm, ballet is pretty hard. Anyway, the dancing classes are great fun. Why don’t you join us?
M: Me? I’m not sure. I’m a terrible dancer.
W: You know, the first visit is free. Why not have a try?
M: Well, when are your modern and tap classes?
W: Modern dance, on Monday evening. Tap, on Thursday.
M: Hmm, I’ll go next Thursday.
W: Nice choice! See you then.
M: See you.

M: Yes, ma’am. What’s the problem?
W: I can’t turn on my computer. I need to use some important photos in it.
M: I see. I can send a repairman tomorrow morning. Is that okay?
W: Not really. I’m afraid I won’t be home tomorrow morning. I’ll be taking my son to the dentist.
M: Then how about tomorrow afternoon?
W: Tomorrow afternoon? That’s fine.
M: Okay, May I have your address?
W: 156 Grove Street in Centerville.

Text 5
Good evening, this is Asia FM. I’m Martin Ford with the news for this hour. “What’s your
Chinese Dream?” A German student asked every stranger he met on his 100-day journey.
The 28-year-old student named Jorg came to China for the first time in 2011. After a year in
China, he was able to use chopsticks and speak Chinese. He went to study Chinese culture in
Zhejiang University in 2015. With an interest in understanding the true meaning of Chinese
Dream among ordinary Chinese people, he rode 5,800 kilometers in 2016 to learn about it. His trip
covered 12 provinces, from the northernmost city of Mohe to the southernmost city of Sanya. Jorg
has set up a public account on social media to record and share his experiences during the trip.
He found that people in the countryside prefer a peaceful life, while city people follow their
hearts. In addition, older Chinese are more concerned with matters at a national level. Education
and personal development are the major concerns of young people. "Though people have their
own way to realize their dreams, they all believe that a strong country is the base." Jorg said.
