A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a "blog". The word "blog" is a short way of saying Web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.

There are millions of blogs on the Interact today.   They provide news,   information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react (反应 ) to the ideas of others.

A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives.  The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.

However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example,  the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.

At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago,  and thousands of people had written on it.  They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.

One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca's Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called "The Weblog Handbook". It has been translated into four languages so far.

Ms Blood says Rebecca's Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything -- politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts.

As the basic building materials of communication, words communicate meaning, but as we have seen, the meanings of words are very much influenced by culture. Meaning is in the person, not in the word, as each person is the product of a particular culture that passes on shared and appropriate meanings. Thus, if we want to learn to communicate well in a foreign language, we must understand the culture that gives that language meaning. Culture gives meaning and provides the context for communication, and the ability to communicate allows us to act out our cultural values and to share our language and our culture.

But our own native language and culture are so much a part of us that we take them for granted. When we travel to another country, it’s as if we carry along with our passports, we view the new environment using our own culture as the standard and although unintentional, our ways of thinking and acting often get in the way of our understanding other languages and cultures. The ability and willingness to change lenses (视角) when we look at a different culture is both the cure and the prevention for such cultural blindness. Studying a new language provides the opportunity to practices changing lenses when we also learn the context or the culture to which it belongs.

72. According to this passage, if you want to understand what a speaker means,     .

     A. you have to understand what he says

     B. you have to understand something behind his words

     C. you have to listen carefully and guess what he implies

     D. you have to share his way of thinking

73. What does the author mean by saying that “Meaning is in the person, not in the word” in the first paragraph?

     A. The person gives the real meaning to the word, not the word itself.

     B. The word has no meaning.

     C. We need to understand what a person says.

     D. We need to know the speaker so that we may understand him.

74. In this passage the author mainly discusses            .

     A. the appropriate meanings of words used in communication

     B. the importance of understanding the person engaged in communication

     C. It’s words that give what one said meaning

     D. the relationship between communication and culture

75. What can we learn from this passage?

     A. While we are learning a foreign language we must know its culture.

     B. The meanings of words are not very important.

     C. We have to understand what a speaker really means.

     D. Knowing a language of country means understanding its culture.

W: The pink is nice. How much is it?

M: It’s $160.

W: Oh, well, it’s a bit too dear. We’ll have to think about it.

7. W: 4373811.

M: Hello. Is that Jean?

W: Yes, speaking.

M: There’s a really good film on at the cinema this week. It’s called Sounds Forever. Would you like to come and see it with me on Wednesday evening?

W: No, I’m afraid I can’t. I’m going to play in a concert at London University on Wednesday.

M: What about Friday then?

W: Great. What time does it start?

M: Seven o’clock. Would you like to go for a drink first?

W: Yes, fine. Is six o’clock OK? We can meet outside the cinema.

M: OK, fine. See you on Friday then. Bye.

8. M: Are you ready for the trip to “The Big Apple”?

W: “The Big Apple”? What are you talking about?

M: “The Big Apple” is the nickname for New York City. You are going to New York with us, aren’t you?

W: Yes, I’m going. I’m especially looking forward to seeing a special show on modern American painters there. But tell me, where did the nickname come from?

M: Some musicians of the 20’s gave it the name. When they played a concert in New York, the musicians called it “The Big Apple”.

W: Amazing! New York is such an interesting place and it even has an interesting nickname.

9. M: Mary, tomorrow is your Mom’s fiftieth birthday. Do you know?

W: Of course I do. How shall we celebrate it?

M: First of all, a birthday present. What about buying her a beautiful skirt?

W: That’s a good idea. It would make her look younger. And a big birthday cake too, with fifty candles.

M: That’s right. Shall we have a special dinner?

W: How about a Chinese dinner?

M: Fine. Where should we have it?

W: We can have it at home. I’ve learned to cook a few dishes from a Chinese friend. I’m sure Mom would like them.

M: All right. Are you going to do the shopping as well?

W: Why don’t we go together, Dad?

M: OK. When?

W: How about this afternoon?

M: OK.

10. When 16-year-old John first entered high school four years ago, he worked very hard and always got very good grades. Besides doing well in his lessons, he was very active in sports. To get up very early every morning to practice running, he never took the school bus to school, he always ran there. He even won a silver medal in the 800-metre race at the school sports meet a year ago. As a reward, his parents bought him something that they had wanted him to have for a long time—a computer. Something began to change. He stopped getting up early and never ran to school. His interest in sports suddenly disappeared. Sometimes he got up so late that he would miss the school bus and thus miss school.

Soon his school began to suffer. One day in the middle of the night his mother saw light in John’s room. She went in and discovered the cause of John’s change. John had played computer games late into the middle of the night ever since he had his computer. This had bad effects on his study and he suffered from lack of sleep. This must be stopped. The next day she had a serious talk with John. Instead of taking away his computer, she told him he was old enough to learn to have some control over himself.

John was happy he had such a wonderful mother and promised to correct himself.

Life in Senior

Life in senior is both tiring, exciting and meaningful.

As everyone knows, senior is far from relaxing and easy. Every minute counts. Working late at night is often the case. There is much homework and we have to take many exams, such as monthly exams. We have to meet with and overcome a lot of difficulties in our studies. We have made constant and great progress with the help of the teachers. Besides our lessons, of course, we also manage to make full of free time to relax ourselves, girls reading colorful magazines and boys playing basketball.

Busy and tired as we are, we still feel happy and confident of our future.
