Dear Tom,
There will be a competition about recitation of poems held in our city. I’m honored to join in this event on behalf of my school. In the meanwhile I feel very nervous, so I hope you can dome a favor. The first thing I want to know is what topic about the poem I should choose. You know it is my biggest problem. Besides, I wonder what speech rate I should keep in my recitation and how long it will take me to finish my show. Last but not least, what clothes should I wear to show my own style and how can I keep right facial expressions? I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice.
Yours,
Li Hua
听力部分录音材料
(Text 1)
M: I’m thinking of dropping my swimming class. I am just not catching on.
W: Stick with it. I did and I learned how to swim eventually.
(Text 2)
M: I can,t get that washing machine downstairs to work, Do you have any suggestions?
W: Try washing just half of the normal load.
(Text 3)
M: Have you ever read Harry Potter?
W: I’m afraid I haven’t.
M: What a pity! You really should. It’s fantastic. I have a copy here. If you like, I’ll lend it to you.
(Text 4)
W: Would you please help me scan this picture into the computer?
M: Yes. But why don’t you do yourself?
W: I don’t know how. To tell you the truth, I just want to learn from you.
(Text 5)
M: Are you getting a postcard for your sister? Here’s a beautiful one of the lake.
W: But I only send cards of places I know. This one of the city at night looks good.
M: I agree, but your sister doesn’t like cities!
W: Well, I’ll get her the forest one. We went there two days ago, remember?
(Text 6)
W: Fifteen minutes to get there! And these suitcases too! I think we ought to take a taxi.
M: Not at this moment. Look at the traffic. It is moving very slowly. We can get there just as quickly on foot.
W: Well, I can’t possibly carry this suitcase any farther.
M: Let me take it.
W: Don’t be silly. You can’t carry your case and mine as well.
M: Yes, I can The cases aren’t that heavy. —Hum!
W: You see! They, re heavier than you thought!
M: Perhaps it is not a bad idea to take a taxi after all.
(Text 7)
W: You look rather pale, Mr Williams. Aren’t you feeling well?
M: It’s nothing serious actually. I was sick most of the night. I didn’t sleep very well.
W: What seems to be the matter? Is it the flu?
M: No, I think it’s something I ate. We ate at that new restaurant last night, and I must have eaten something that didn’t agree with me.
W: Was it that new restaurant over on Fourth Street? Opened only two weeks ago?
M: As a matter of fact, it was. Why do you ask?
W: Because Jerry ate there last week and had the same kind of problem. He was sick the next day, too.
M: That’s interesting. Maybe the health authorities should look into the matter.
W: That’s what I think. Two people with similar problems in such a short time can’t just be coincidence!
(Text 8)
W: Hi, John! Long time no see.
M: Julia! It must be over two years. The last time we met was at Kate’s birthday party, wasn’t it?
W: Oh, yes. That’s right. How is life with you?
M: Not too bad. You’re getting a little fat. Your husband must be feeding you too much.
W: Yeah. He enjoys cooking and the dishes he cooks are very delicious. But that’s not the reason. The only trouble is that I have no time for exercise. Anyway I should lose some weight from now on
M: Are you still working in that factory? You ought to have taken the job at our place when the manager offered the job to you. We have a strict five-day week and you,re free at weekends.
W: I ought to have. Michael often complains about my working too long. Often when I come back home from work, our children have already fallen asleep.
M: Michael is right. You should spend more time with your family. Think it over,Julia. I could ask our manager; maybe he’ll offer you a job.
(Text 9)
W: What topic did you finally choose for the term paper for your World Economy class?
M: After thinking about a few ideas, I finally settled on the difference between Japanese and American styles of management.
W: Hmm. Why did you choose a topic like that?
M: Well, I'm planning to study Business in graduate school next year. After that, I hope to start my own company.
W: It’s amazing enough! I’m also doing a paper on how Japanese management styles are being adapted by American firms for my Comparative Cultures class.
M: Why don’t we sit down and share some of our sources after we’ve each been to the library?
W: Great idea! Should we meet at the snack bar next Wednesday at this time?
M: That’s fine with me. See you then
(Text 10)
When you take a walk in any of the cities in the west, you often see a lot of people walking with dogs, ft is still true that the dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world. But the reasons why people keep a dog have changed. In the old days, people used to train dogs to protect themselves against the attacks by other beasts. And later they came to realize that the dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey their master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting , the dogs would not eat without permission what they caught. But now people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery, but the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with; for a young couple , a dog is their child when they have no children; for old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.
