(Text 1)
M: What are your work hours?
W: Eight to twelve in the morning; one to five in the afternoon. Well, we have a one-hour break for lunch between twelve and one.
M: Yours are better than mine.
(Text 2)
W: It’s a miserable day today,isn’t it?
M: Yes, you’re right. It’s been raining continuously since yesterday morning.
W: Do you think it’ll clear up this afternoon?
M: I certainly hope so. I want to go and play some golf.
(Text 3)
W: Mike, are you going to be driving down to the beach for class tomorrow?
M: Yeah, I need to get down there really early.
W: What time do you think you’ll be leaving?
M: I need to leave at about 4:00 am.
(Text 4)
M: Does this bus go to the station?
W: No, you’ll have to get off at the bank, then take a 184.
M: Can you tell me where to get off?
W: It is the bus stop next to last.
(Text 5)
M: Would you help me for a minute, please?
W. Sure. What do you want me to do?
M: Could you please hold these packages while I look for the key to the door?
W: I’d be glad to. What’s in these packages? They are extremely heavy.
(Text 6)
W: Hello. May I speak to Mr Johnson?
M: Speaking. What’s the matter?
W: There’s something wrong with my pet dog. It doesn’t feel like eating.
M: How long has it been like this?
W: For about two days.
M: What did you give it to eat this morning?
W: Two hamburgers and half a kilo of meat and a glass of milk.
M: Well, there’s nothing wrong with it. You had better take it out and walk it for a while. Then it’ll be better.
(Text 7)
W: Do you often get online. Bob?
M: Not so often. I’m too busy to surf the Internet.
W: How often do you get online?
M: Oh, a couple of times a week, maybe twice or three times.
W: So, what do you do on the Internet?
M: Well, I deal with e-mails.
W: Anything else you do on the Internet?
M: Oh, I look up information for my writing. What about you?
W: Oh, seldom. I never e-mail or look up information online.
M: Why not?
W: I prefer to write with a pen and paper and look through books in libraries.
(Text 8)
W: My colleagues at work say I should get a health insurance. What do you think?
M: I think it’s important. I can give you my insurance agent’s card if you want. He can help you a lot.
W: But I’m not sure what kind I need. In Germany, we have a national insurance program. But here you have nothing. I think I should think about it.
M: Yes, I know. Many countries have national health insurance. America doesn’t.
W: Why is that?
M: Well, it’s because of the American culture. Americans think private companies can do things better than the government. So we depend on private companies for insurance.
W: But isn’t that expensive?
M: You’re right. It is expensive. And many people criticize it. They say it is not fair to poor people. They say the health systems are better in other countries, especially in Europe.
W: But what do you think?
M: I have no idea. I just do my best to have good insurance. It’s important.
(Text 9)
W: Good afternoon, sir. What can I do for you today?
M: Yeah. I would like a table for one, please.
W: Right this way, please. Okay, take this seat, please. It is just near the window.
M: Thank you very much. Then can I have a menu?
W: Here you are. My name is Alice and I am your waitress today. Would you like to hear today’s specials, sir? They are popular with many people.
M: Of course.
W: Well, we have a wonderful mushroom soup to start off with. Today’s main course is fish and chips. The fish is very fresh and it’s brought in from the docks this morning.
M: All right. I would like the fish and chips.
W: And would you like to have a starter? Our salads are excellent. There are chicken salads, beef salads and green salads. Would you like one?
M: Okay. I would like a green salad.
W: Very good. Then would you like something to drink, tea or coffee or anything else?
M: Oh. I would like some mineral water, please.
W: OK. So that’s a green salad, fish and chips and mineral water.
M: Yes, that’s right. Thanks a lot.
(Text 10)
W: Johnny asked Dotty how her first day in her Duarte ESL class was. It was terrible, she told him. She understood little of what the Level 4 teacher said. He spoke too fast for her. She had struggled through a Level 3 class at a Monrovia school and she thought it was a difficult process.
When the teacher asked if there were any questions about the class, she told him that she   didn’t understand most of what he had said. She didn’t want to fail it the first time, however, or any time. She would like to try her best to do it well.
The teacher gave them homework the first day, of course. They were supposed to write a 400-word essay supporting gun control. That was much more than she used to do, 200 or 300 words. Of course, Dotty said, she could write that essay in her native language. But there was no way she could write it in English. She showed Johnny the textbook. The print was so tiny that trying to read just a few pages gave her a headache. On top of that was all the new vocabulary on each page. “I’m going to drop the class. I feel so confused and tired,” she said.

Dear Jim,
My name is Li Hua, one of the students you taught last term. I’m writing to thank you for donating the basketballs to our school and teaching us how to play basketball.
We know you come a long way from Canada, and this is the first time that you have volunteered in China. I would like to tell you that all of us enjoy your teaching very much, for your class is so interesting and lively. We not only learn the knowledge related to basketball, but also learn a lot of skills about it, which benefits us mentally as well as physically. We have begun to love playing basketball. All the students and their parents are thankful to you for your hard-work. We do hope you can come and visit us in the future.
Best wishes!
