Forty years ago, I was an instructor in the military (军事) school, when young Scoresby was given his first examination. I felt extremely sorry for him. Everybody answered the questions intelligently, while he didn’t know anything. He was a nice, pleasant young man. It was painful to see him stand there giving stupid answers.
I knew when examined again he would be thrown out. So I tested him and worked him like a slave. I made him work over and over again on a few questions which I knew he would be asked. He came through very well on the day of the examination. By some strange, lucky accident, he was asked no questions except those I made him study.
I thought the end that would destroy him would be the mathematics examination. I decided to make his end as painless as possible. So, I pushed facts into his stupid head for hours. Finally, I let him go to the examination to experience what I was sure would be his dismissal (开除) from school. But the result shocked me out of my mind. He took first prize! And he got the highest praise. I felt guilty ——what I was doing was not right. But I only wanted to make his dismissal less painful for him. I never dreamed it would lead to such strange, laughable results.
Then, the war broke out. I felt sad for him that there had to be a war. Peace would have given this donkey a chance to escape from being found out so stupid. I waited for the worst to happen. It did. He was appointed a captain!
I thought I was responsible to the country for this. I must go with him and protect the nation against him. So, I joined up with him. And away we went to the field.
And there ——oh, it was terrible. Mistakes, fearful mistakes ——he never did anything right ——nothing but mistakes. But nobody knew how stupid he really was. And what kept me in a continual fear was that every mistake he made increased his glory and fame.
He continued to climb up, over the dead bodies of his superiors (上级). Then, in the hottest moment of one battle down went our colonel (上校). My heart jumped into my mouth, for Scoresby took his place. The battle grew hotter. The English troops were falling back all over the field. Our regiment (团) occupied an extremely important position. One mistake now would bring total disaster. What did Scoresby do? He just mistook his left hand for his right hand. An order came for him to fall back and support our right. Instead, he moved forward and went over the hill to the left. We were over the hill before this mad movement could be discovered and stopped. And what did we find? A large Russian army waiting! And what happened? Were we all killed? That is exactly what would have happened in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred. But no —— those surprised Russians thought we must be the whole British army, instead of only one regiment. They turned and escaped. Away they went over the hill and down into the field in wild disorder. We ran after them. In no time, there was the greatest turn-around ever seen. The British turned defeat into a sweeping and shining victory.
The commander looked on, with wonder, surprise and joy. He sent for Scoresby, and hugged him on the field in front of all the armies. Scoresby became famous that day as a great military leader, honored throughout the world. That honor will never disappear while history books last.
Look at his chest, flooded with medals. Each is the record of some great stupidity or other.
55. Why did the storyteller help Scoresby before each examination?
 A. He understood Scoresby’s potential talents.
 B. He particularly liked nice, pleasant students.
 C. He had some special relations with Scoresby.
 D. He thought it his duty to help a difficult student.
56. When Scoresby was appointed a captain, the storyteller felt ________.
 A. relaxed           B. joyful            C. guilty          D. excited
57. According to the storyteller, Scoresby rose up in the army rank because _________.
 A. he fought bravely in the field              B. he survived his higher officers
 C. he was supported by soldiers             D. he succeeded in many battles
58. In one battle, when English were falling back all over the field, Scoresby ________.
 A. made a mistake in the direction           B. disobeyed the order on purpose
 C. was ordered to start an attack       D. was determined to fight back
59. In the eyes of the world, Scoresby was ________.
 A. a lucky dog                             B. a great military man
 C. a powerful leader                      D. an international hero
60. The best title for this passage is ________.
 A. Fool          B. Trick             C. Luck          D. Success
第二节:下面文章中有五处(第61-65题)需要添加小标题。请从下列A、 B、 C、 D、 E和 F中选出符合各段意思的的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Facebook’s advertising
B. Typical activities on Facebook
C. Suggestions about the future of Facebook
D. Problems with trust in personal information
E. Product purchase following Facebook’s friends
F. People’s attitude towards the development of Facebook
Facebook (脸谱网) is a communicating tool similar to QQ in China, shortly after its coming into being, it became popular with tens of millions of clients (用户). Being one of them, Jane is talking about Facebook. The followings are her descriptions about it:
61.________
The most common activity I use Facebook for is to see what people are up to. I like to look through friends’ photo albums to see where they’ve been and who they’re with. It’s also a nice way to message friends casually. I created a Facebook group for a certain club, so I just send out messages to the group when a meeting or event is coming up.
62.________
When Facebook was first started, everyone in my age wanted to be on it. The first version didn’t have any of the fancy things—we could just message, play poke and befriend. It was too flat. When they started to add new features like the wall, photo albums, video capabilities, and groups, people became more interested. But then Facebook took it too far. Now I find Facebook has quite a few useless features. I prefer an older version of just the basics—messaging, walls, photos and groups.
63.________
I don’t add anything too personal to my profile. My only concern is that friends can post pictures of me that I don’t want to share. I download them but they will still be on the Internet. I don’t think that’s a good idea. I think when you don’t want a photo to be shared, it should be deleted from the photo album.
64.________
It wouldn’t bother me one bit. It’s the same as any other recommendation method. I think it’s a good place to sell/buy. You see your friends are into it, so you feel the connection right there —it seems like a great time to make a purchase. If Facebook had this service setup, people could just go on to see what new songs their friends are listening to - one click and they can purchase the songs on music websites, or rent new movies on movie websites etc.
65.________
If Facebook keeps trying to stick in useless applications to attract advertisers, it may sink in the future. But if it allows users to go to music or movie websites directly from their friends profiles, it may become the new social networking search engine that people use to look through their friends stuff when they need advice about what to buy. If they include a feature like favorite stores to shop at, they will definitely expand on the possibilities.

Ⅴ. 第二节 书面表达:(满分30分)
Possible version 1:
No doubt everyone hopes to be successful. However, this doesn’t always happen as expected. For example, I can still remember the sports meet in middle school, in which I took part in the 800-meter race. At first I thought I could not finish such a long distance for I had no talent for sports. But I decided to practice running every day. Months of hard work rewarded me with the third place. Although I was not the first one, I finished the race. To me this was a success.
Personally, process is more important than result. As long as we have done our utmost in the process, we won’t feel sorry for ourselves though the result is not so satisfactory.  (120 words)

Possible version 2:
Success, as is known, results from constant efforts. However, not everyone can achieve desired success. Take my friend, Alex, for example, who has been dreaming of being a writer when he was only 15. After numerous attempts, his writings still couldn’t be published. Now he’s a worker and yet he keeps on writing in his spare time. Though he can’t reach his aim, he never loses heart.
In my view, failure as well as success is part of our life. No matter how hard we try, sometimes we may still fail, but we can learn something from failure. In fact, failure doesn’t mean we lose everything. Only when we face failure properly can we understand the real meaning of success.   (120 words)
