Besides/Also
VI. 书面表达:
Lin Shuhao, known as Lin-sanity, a famous basketball player on active service in NBA, was born in America on August 23rd,1988.
He displays his talent for basketball, which is sweeping across the United States. His motto may help us find the reasons why he turns out to be a success so quickly. He never denies himself and tries to seize the important opportunity when it comes up. He thinks it is important to stay modest all the time. Besides, he believes one can succeed by working harder than others.
It is his devotion to basketball and working hard that lead to his achievement. If he hadn’t trained crazily or believed in himself, he could hardly have made his dream come true.
听力原文:
1. M: Did Mary come?
W: Yes, she did. She said she would come again next Friday.
2. W: I heard on the radio that the storm is getting nearer.
M: If the weatherman is as exact as usual, it will probably be sunny all day.
3. W: I know you don’t have much time left. I believe if you take Bus 209 instead of Bus 3, you can save an hour.
M: You’re right. It takes only 4 hours to get to Los Angeles on Bus 209.
4. W: Mark, you look worried. What’s the matter?
M: I’ve lost $200. I should have been more careful. I just left it on the bank counter for a moment, and then it suddenly disappeared.
5. W: I’m looking for Mr. Smith.
M: I’m Mr. Smith.
W: I want to find a job as a housekeeper.
M: Have you worked in a hotel?
W: No, but I can make beds, and I clean very well.
6. M: Have you seen my school bag, Mom? I’ve been looking for it everywhere.
W: I hope you didn’t leave it in school. You never know where you put your things. Where did you last see it?
M: Last night before I went to bed, I think. I remember putting it on the desk.
W: Really? If you put it there, it should still be there. No one has been to your room. So it must be here somewhere.
M: Yes, but where? That’s what I want to know. Oh, dear, it’s about time for the school bus.
W: Hey, what’s that under your blanket at the foot of your bed?
7. M: Why didn’t your uncle fly?
W: It would have cost $65. The train fare is only $21.
M: That’s really a big difference.
W: Well, if the train doesn’t arrive till 9:50, we have 25 minutes to wait. Do you want to go into the coffee shop?
M: Not unless you do. I’d rather buy a magazine and sit down and read.
W: A good idea. We can start watching for Uncle Tom around 9:45.
M: What does he look like?
W: He’s about your height and about your weight. He’s around 55, maybe older.
M: OK. I’m going to buy a magazine. Wait here till I come back.
8. M: Hello, do you have a minute?
W: Sure.
M: I’m Lee and I study in Peking University. Nice to meet you!
W: Nice to meet you, too. My name is Lynn O’Neil. You can call me Lynn directly.
M: OK, Lynn, what is your nationality?
W: I’m American. I was born in Spain but was brought up in the US.
M: Do you speak Spanish? You said you were born there.
W: No. Neither of my parents is Spanish and they left there before I could talk. You know, it’s really hard to start learning a new language if nobody around you speaks that language.
M: Yeah, that’s true. Do you come here for study or simply on a visit?
W: For study, of course. I majored in Asian Study when I was in California University.
M: By the way, how long have you been in China?
W: Ah… Only three months. I came here immediately after graduation.
9. M: That’s our table over there by the window.
W: Wow! What a romantic place, Doug!
M: Yeah, I wanted to…Look out for the candle! Your coat is on fire!
W: Oh, no! Quick, give me some water! (Sally puts the fire out.) There, it’s out.
M: Are you OK? Your beautiful coat.
W: It’s no big deal. I need a new coat anyway. Let’s just sit down and order.
M: We don’t need to order. They have a set meal for Valentine’s Day called the “Sweetheart Special”!
W: Really? I can’t wait. This looks like a really fancy restaurant.
M: Well, I wanted some place special. You know, I really like you, Sally.
W: I can tell—Cupid’s arrow really found you, didn’t it?
M: I’ve been head over heels for you ever since we met, and show you how I feel—I brought these for you!
W: Thanks a…a…a… Achoo! I’m sorry I didn’t tell you—but I’m allergic to roses!
M: Sorry! I’ll take them back then. Are you OK?
W: I’ll be fine—as soon as I stop sneezing…Achoo!
10. W: Well, Mr. Smith, we have had an interesting discussion about your work. Now, tell us something about your after-work activities.
M: I guess not much different from everyone else. I’m interested in sports, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where I have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I’m running I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run I’m sometimes surprised to find that I’ve managed to solve a problem that was on my mind.
Next year I’m going to try the London Marathon. It’s a long, hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers——and you have to be tough to finish, but I very much want to do it. I worry a bit about getting old, and I’d like to prove to myself that I’m still almost as fit as I was twenty years ago.
I’m interested in climbing as well as running. I’ll never become an expert climber, but I know what I’m doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I’ve done some easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn’t share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1,000 meters, so we decide to follow different hobbies.
