SECTION B (10 points)
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Pollution is a growing problem that is facing the international community, but even the actions that we take can make a difference. Littering is creating environmental problems all over the world and is often created by careless individuals. If we guard our actions against careless littering we can ensure a better world for everyone.
Littering is a severe problem in many countries around the world. For example, the African city of Kampala, the capitol of Uganda, is suffering from the consequences of littering. For many years the city’s poor didn’t have a proper way to dispose of trash, so garbage filled the streets.  Over the years much of the plastic garbage would slowly be pushed into the ground. This plastic litter doesn’t allow rain water to seep into the ground and has caused flooding. In many of Kampala’s poor neighborhoods whenever it rains people’s homes become flooded with water.  This water is often dirty and has allowed diseases to spread. This flooding has become so bad that the Ugandan government has banned plastic bags in the entire country to stop the littering.
Trash often finds its way into the water. Today the world’s oceans are believed to have millions of tons of trash floating around in them. This creates a problem for wildlife because they may accidentally eat the trash and die from it. Scientists have found on very remote islands baby birds that have died because their stomachs were full of trash. Fish often get tangled in plastic and will also die. Our actions in our own countries affect the most remote parts of the planet.
We can all be part of the solution to stop this pollution, just by preventing careless littering.  If you need to throw something away, don’t toss it over your shoulder — find a trash can. If you see a friend littering tell them not to. By making this small change we can create a better world for all.

Text 1
W: David, you can play the guitar, can’t you?
M: I have played for about six years. But I haven’t practised it much since I went to college. Why do you ask?
W: I’m singing for a group that meets every Wednesday. We have several piano and violin players, but not one guitar player.
M: Who is directing the group?
W: Janet Pearson.
M: Well, I’m afraid I need a lot of practice before I can play before audience.
W: Don’t worry about that. Miss Pearson will teach you if necessary.
M: Then I think I can have a try.
W: I’m sure you’ll be just fine. I expect to see you next Wednesday.
Text 2
M: I think I was very lucky to get that job. Now we are able to live in a little village.
W: Ah, but it won’t be a little village forever. This is a developing area. There will be a lot more people here in about five years’ time.
M: Yes, but there won’t be any factories. Just two or three office buildings and they will be far behind that woodland over there.
W: How did you sleep last night, by the way?
M: Very mice. Never slept better. It was so quiet!
W: I didn’t sleep too well. I couldn’t get used to the silence. The only noise I heard last night was some birds at about two o’clock in the morning.
M: Well, the silence was wonderful for me.
Text 3
W: I’m telling you, I had nothing to do with whatever happened to your lawn.
M: Really? Your dog always runs around wherever he likes, and so do your kids.
W: Just because they do that in my yard doesn’t mean you can accuse them of doing something to your property and get away with it! Besides, my husband took the kids and the dog to the mountains last night.
M: So where were you this morning?
W: For your information, I was at Mrs. Appleton’s house.
M: The woman who lives at the end of our street?
W: That’s right. We had coffee together. Go over there and ask her yourself if you don’t believe me!
M: Well, I guess I owe you an apology.
Text 4
W: I just can’t believe how quickly your brother’s illness took over.
M: Neither can I. Just last month, we were on a picnic together and he was fine.
W: How can someone die from a disease so quickly?
M: Cancer is a powerful disease. People can die from it almost without warning.
W: It’s hard to imagine our lives without him. I saw him almost every day.
M: I’m really worried about my family, especially my mother.
W: I’m just going to try to be there for your family as much as possible. It’s going to be hardest for Christine. She and Dennis were childhood sweethearts.
M: My brother and I shared all the same hopes and dreams. He can’t be gone. He just can’t be!
W: We are just never ready when someone young dies. Dennis was only thirty-four.
M: Just before he got sick, we were talking about going into business together.
W: Life can be so unkind.
M: This is the saddest day of my life.
Text 5
W: I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!
M: Um, that doesn’t sound good.
W: Ha ha, it’s a figure of speech. It means I’m really hungry.
M: Oh, I see. What exactly is a figure of speech?
W: A figure of speech is a way to express something using a creative idea or an image. For example, a horse is a really big animal, so if you say you could eat a horse, it’s like saying that you could eat a huge amount of food because you’re so hungry.
M: Can you give me another example?
W: Sure. If you say, “Money doesn’t grow on trees,” it means that you should spend your money wisely because it is limited. If it grew on trees, like fruit, you could just have more and you wouldn’t need to save it.
M: How do you know so much about figures of speech?
W: My English teacher taught us a lot of them. He said that being able to use figures of speech is a good way to measure if someone is an advanced English speaker.
M: Well, it sounds like you’re doing pretty well in his class!
Text 6
M: So that’s the end of what I had prepared to share with you today. Now, I’d like to open it up for questions. We have about twenty minutes for questions and discussion. I’d be very interested to hear your comments... Yes?
W: Yes, thank you for your excellent presentation. I have one question I would like to ask. You said our sales in Asia have been very low in general... I’m wondering what the situation is like in Japan.
M: Good question. As I mentioned, Asia is slow overall, and this includes the Japanese market. There is no major difference between Japan and other Asian countries. Does that answer your question?
W: Yes, thank you. Another question... Would you care to comment on the cultural impact of multinational companies on local economies?
M: I’m afraid that’s outside the focus of my talk. I can talk to you individually about that after this discussion.
W: What about our future direction in the Asian market? Can you talk a little about what plans we have?
M: I don’t think I’m the right person to answer that question. Perhaps our general manager, Mr. Thomas, can answer that...
Text 7
One day, a man was on his way to work. That morning, he had gotten up a little later than usual, so he had left home in a hurry and hadn’t eaten breakfast. As he was sitting on the bus, he thought about how hungry he was, and he looked down at his shoes... but he didn’t see them on his feet. He was wearing his slippers instead! He looked at his watch and decided that he did not have enough time to go back home and get his shoes, so he thought about what to tell his boss. He thought and thought, but he couldn’t think of a good excuse to tell his boss. Finally, he decided that the only solution was to buy a pair of shoes at the department store next to his office building. The man ended up spending $200 on a new pair of shoes. He complained to himself on his way to the office, but when he tried to open the front door, he found that it was locked. Then he remembered it was a holiday that day, and everyone had the day off.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Internet in our interpersonal communication?
The Internet has made it possible for us to keep in touch with our friends conveniently. We can rapidly access information about others through their micro blog, QQ, facebook or email, even without calling them or talking face to face.
However, the Internet threatens to change our interpersonal communication and relationships. The idea that it is no longer necessary to communicate face to face has reduced the effectiveness and efficiency of communication. Misunderstandings among people and the absence of feelings are increasingly common.
Therefore, we should take care not to depend too much on the Internet and ignore the importance of face-to-face communication. Only so can we make full use of the Internet while avoiding its negative effects.
