LATEST BOOKS
Below you’ll find some latest published books that have been added to the library’s collection in the past 45 days.
She Is Not Invisible
Sergwick’s “She Is Not Invisible” is partly a thriller, partly a philosophical reflection on coincidence, but mostly, it’s the story of Laureth: a blind British teenager whose father, a famous author, has gone missing in America. She sets out to find him, taking her seven-year-old brother as a guide. She is not sure this is strictly legal, so she pretends not to be blind as they make their way through Heathrow airport and the streets of New York City.
Six Bad Poets
“Six Bad Poets” is a farce-in-verse(闹剧式诗句) by Christopher Reid, following the brave acts and misfortunes of a group of poets –three men and three women, whose destinies(命运) are more closely connected than they themselves can know, in their attempts to deal with the risks of London literary society.
Britain Against Napoleon
This book describes how the British state successfully organized itself to overcome Napoleon.
For more than twenty years after 1793, the French army was supreme(最优的) in continental Europe, and the British population lived in fear of French invasion(人侵). How did Britain survive and win a generation-long war against a country which at its peak commanded many times Britain’s own resources and manpower?
In “Britain Against Napoleon”, Roger Knight looks beyond the familiar bravery of the army and navy to the politicians and civil servants, and examines how they made it possible to continue the war.
The Beau Monde
Hannah Greig’s “The Beau Monde” tells the story of the world’s first fashion-obsessed(痴迷于时尚的) society in eighteenth-century London and takes us on a tour from court and Parliament (约会) to Georgian London’s parks, pleasure grounds and private homes, meeting a rich and colorful cast of contemporary characters along the way. It reveals the secrets of how membership of the new elite(精英) was won, maintained and sometimes lost. This book also shows how being fashionable was the key to power in a new social order.

(B)
When my friend put out the idea of homeschooling to her parents, the first reaction they gave was, “You are cutting the child off the world.” Did the child really get cut off or did the child socialize better?
The moment we hear of homeschooling, we think the child will have no opportunities to interact with peers(同龄人). However, in my friend’s opinion, we forget that when attending a regular school, the child is not into socializing all the while. The child is restricted to so many other activities. Studies take a major role in a child’s life. The child hardly has the time to interact at school.
The child might be meeting and studying along with many peers; however, how many kids interact with all the kids in a class? But in homeschooling system, as my friend mentioned, the kid has all the time and can plan his day accordingly. During the day the child studies just like other school-going kids but with no burden of homework and project work, the child has so much free time in the evening as to effectively interact and play with peers. The quality time the child spends in education is really impressive.
Homeschooled kids have the opportunity to socialize more often as they have a lot of time in their hands. They can also make socializing a regular habit. Just as my friend said, her child goes to a neighboring park almost every day and has a set of friends who go there daily. Other children get back home to finish off homework and project work whereas her child who is already through with studies gets the opportunity to spend time with family members.
When I heard this, I really felt how lucky the child was. Definitely the child had a better opportunity to socialize when compares with my kids. However, I might not consider homeschooling for my kid, as I am so used to the traditional schooling system and feel regular schooling the safest bet.
61. What is the author’s attitude towards his friend’s idea of homeschooling?
   A. Surprised.    B. Interested.     C. Confident.         D. Negative.
62. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _________.
 A. express his views on homeschooling.
 B. explain what homeschooling is.
 C. share his ways of teaching his children.
 D. promote homeschooling.
63. What do we know about homeschooling children?
 A. They don’t interact with their peers often.
 B. They have more spare time to play.
 C. They are restricted to certain activities.
 D. They can’t gain enough knowledge.
64. According to the author what is the biggest advantage of homeschooling children?
 A. They will become braver.             B. They can be more popular.
 C. They can be better at socializing.        D. They can study better.
65. How does the passage mainly develop?
 A. By following the order of importance.  B. By following the order of time
 C. By making comparison.     D. By presenting facts.

Feeling lonely? New research suggests you might want to find out that answer. Not only is loneliness an unpleasant condition, it can also harm the body’s immune system.
The new study shows that people who are lonely experience more reactivation(重新激活) of hidden viruses in their systems than the well-connected ones. Lonely people also are more likely than others to produce inflammatory compounds(炎性化合物) in response to stress, which may cause heart disease and other chronic disorders. “Both, in different ways, indicate that the immune system is out of whack,” said study researcher Lisa Jaremka.
Jaremka and her colleagues studied 200 female breast cancer survivors and 134 overweight, middle-aged adults with no major health problems.
In the first study, the researchers analyzed the blood of the breast cancer survivors for antibodies against viruses. These common viruses can remain inactive and symptomless inside the body. Higher antibody levels indicate higher levels of activated viruses. The results showed that the lonelier the participant, the higher the levels of virus antibodies in the blood. Jaremka said, “The immune system is unable at that time, for whatever reason, in this case loneliness perhaps, to keep that virus under control.
In the second study, the researchers measured cytokines(炎性因子) in 144 of the breast cancer survivors as well as the healthy thought overweight middle-aged adults. The participants gave a blood sample and then experienced the stress of having to give a speech and do mental math in front of people in white lab coats.
After the stressful speech, the lonelier the person is, the higher the levels of cytokine interleuking-6 are. This cytokine is important for healing in the short term, because it promotes inflammation. However, when cytokines react too readily, inflammation can be harmful. Chronic inflammation has been linked to many diseases.
People who are lonely also tend to react more strongly to negative events in their lives. If lonely people experience daily life as more stressful, it may cause chronic stress, which in turn disrupts the immune system.
The study indicates that those who feel close to friends and family can know that their health is likely getting benefits from those relationships. People who feel socially connected are experiencing positive outcomes.
66. The Underlined phrases “is out of whack” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by_____.
A. becomes healthy             B. goes wrong
C. starts to respond            D. lose connection
67. What do the high levels of antibodies indicate?
A. The immune system is failing to control the viruses.
B. The immune system has managed to kill the viruses.
C. The person has been badly ill.
D. The immune system has been damaged.
68. Why should frequent reaction of cytokines be avoided?
A. Because it would make people more stressed.
B. Because it can destroy the immune system completely.
C. Because it may cause harmful chronic inflammation.
D. Because it would make breast cancer survivors overweight.
69. According to the passage, lonely people are more likely to _____.
A. have had more negative experiences
B. become more sensitive to negative events.
C. feel more pressure from chronic diseases.
D. react strongly to positive daily life.
70. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Loneliness has its advantages and disadvantages.
B. Lonely people tend to have negative thoughts.
C. Loneliness does harm to health both mentally and physically.
D. People whose immune system is weak tend to get lonely.

Once you solve the problem, you get to the next level.
Not everybody is fit to share your problems with you, and not everybody is fit to know your problems. But you should have someone you can speak to and someone who is always willing to listen to you. Nong’s micro blog cartoon first drew wide attention in late 2012. He draws stories of real-life people striving to (努力) achieve their life goals. Though each story consists of only several pictures, it takes Nong a lot of time and effort to finish them. “ I want my work to be recognizable. I want people to think of me as a cartoonist who makes cheerful works,” Nong says. Therefore he digs deep into each person’s story. Before drawing, he spends a whole day researching the person’s background and another three days on interviews. “Micro blog cartoons are interesting not because of the drawings. We attract viewers with the content,” Nong says. “Besides, viewers only spend one or two minutes on each micro blog post. If my work can cause reflection, then it is meaningful.”
On the way to success, Nong had his struggles. He even thought about giving up drawing in 2011. But when he read the micro blog cartoons of Chen Anni, a well-known female cartoonist of Nong’s age, he found new courage. “She is not even a fine art student and she is pursuing (追求) her dream of drawing cartoons. Why should I give up?” Nong says. After that, Nong worked even harder, gradually becoming popular and receiving positive feedback.
Many fans have sent Nong private messages, telling him that his work has encouraged them to pursue their life goals and that if they succeed they will share their stories with him. “I’m glad that I have conveyed a positive attitude through my work.
