Dear Linda,
I’m very happy to have received your letter, in which you asked about our class uniform. Let me tell you something about it.
As the graduation ceremony is drawing near, we have been designing the class uniform to highlight our class style and memorize our high school life. At first we had different ideas about the design and color. After much discussion, we’re now designing a blue one with all the students’ cartoon images printed on the front and the logo Super Class 3 on the back.
What do you think of our class uniform? I would be grateful if you could give me some advice.
Best wishes.
Li Hua

Text 1
M: I have a bad headache. Maybe I need more sleep.
W: Actually, what you need is less time on the Internet. After all, you’ve spent too much time playing computer games, I think.
Text2
W: When will our plane arrive in Beijing?
M: Let me see. It’s eight thirty. I think our plane will land in twenty minutes.
Text 3
W: Ouch! You stepped on my foot, young man.
M: Oh, I’m terribly sorry. It’s too crowded here and I’m carrying two big boxes.
Text 4
W: Have you finished the work on my computer?
M: Sorry, we haven’t got the parts yet.
W: My God! When do you think you can get it repaired?
M: Err, perhaps next week.
Text 5
W: What’s the matter, Bill?
M: Do you know where poor Lily is? Her pet dog was hit by a car this morning.
W: Well, I know about it. She has taken it to hospital.
Text 6
W: Hey, Ben. Did you do well in your essay?
M: I just got B plus, but Mr. Jones gave Tom full marks.
W: I’m not surprised. He’s the teachers’ pet, you know. They always give him good marks.
M: Teachers’ pet? I don’t think so. You know, he’s my roommate. He gets up early and goes to bed late every day.
W: Maybe that’s just his habit.
M: No. You envy him, don’t you? I always see him in the library.
W: Oh! No wonder he is a top student.
Text 7
W: Hi, dad. Is there a map at home?
M: Yeah, why?
W: I’m going to a party in a rural place at the Peak Hill Llamas on Friday.
M: A party? What party?
W: A good-bye party for Jenny. You know she’s moving to Newcastle this week.
M: Oh, how do you plan to go there?
W: I don’t know. I’m thinking about taking the tube.
M: No, the tube doesn’t go there. The tram will do, though.
W: Good. Where should I get off, then?
M: At the Central Park Station.
W: Do you know how long it will take, dad?
M: Um…more than three hours, probably. Why don’t you drive your new car?
W: Well, dad. You know I’ve just got my license and I don’t know how to get there.
M: Come on, sweetheart. Be confident, OK? Here’s the map.
W: Ok, I’ll do it. By the way, what gift do you think I should take to her?
M: I’m not sure. Maybe an ice cream cake or some flowers.
W: Anything special? I want to take something that lasts long.
M: Oh, I remember you both like teddy bears, right?
W: Good idea. How could I forget that? Thank you, dad.
M: You’re welcome. Take care and have a good time.
Text 8
W: Are you going somewhere?
M: What? Oh, these? I’m making plans for our next holiday.
W: Oh, yes.
M: I like to be ready, you know. For example, we are going to drive from Paris to Toulouse. There’s a good road through Orleans and Limoges, and perhaps it’s quicker to go that way. But sometimes it’s better to go round a longer way. You see more. There’s less traffic, so it’s easier to drive.
W: How do you know which road is best?
M: The guidebook. It tells me everything. Look—there’s a good restaurant in Bourges, and that’s where we stop for lunch. In the evening, we will stop there and stay at that hotel. In the morning, before we leave, we will see the castle. I write them all down, you see, one page for every day. It all goes in here. I couldn’t go on holiday without that.
W: Wow, you are really organized!
M: Always make plans. That’s the way. Always know what you are going to do, and when you’re going to do it.
Text 9
W: How should we behave in social life?
M: I think people should trust each other and not be dishonest. People shouldn’t lie to each other.
W: But is lying always bad? Sometimes we need to lie to make people happy. If your ugly friend asks you “Am I beautiful?” , what should you say? If you tell her the truth, she might be very upset. You should tell her she is beautiful so that she will be happy.
M: I disagree. I think people should always be honest with each other so that they can trust each other. For example, if you tell your ugly friend she is beautiful, she might enter a beauty contest. Then people will laugh at her and she will be very sad. Then she will not trust you anymore.
W: That’s a good point.
M: Do you think that people should fight with each other?
W: No, I think fighting is always bad. What do you think?
M: I think that fighting is sometimes necessary. If someone attacks your friends or family, you should defend them.
W: I disagree. I think that if people refuse to fight, then there will be less fighting.
Text 10
We all know one of American greatest writers John Steinbeck. Maybe you know many of his novels and short stories are about people with troubles and problems. But Travels with Charley is different. It’s a book about traveling around the United States. John Steinbeck and Charley traveled together from New York to Maine and then to the Midwest. From the Midwest, they went west to California, and then visited Texas. Finally, John and Charley traveled through the South, and back north to New York.
It was reported that John Steinbeck’s journey took three months to complete. When he arrived home, he wrote about what he saw and heard when he crossed the country. He thought that Americans were wonderful people, and that the United States was full of peaceful towns, great cities, huge mountains, and beautiful parks. Charley seemed to enjoy the trip although he didn’t say or write anything. You might wonder why Charley had no idea about America. It is only for the reason that he was John Steinbeck’s dog, a big black dog.
