Starting November 1, 2010, millions of Chinese census (人口普查) takers have visited more than 400 million families to count the population over a 10-day period.
It is China’s sixth national census. The last one, in 2000, showed that the country had 1.29 billion people. About 90% of the people were asked to fill in an 18-question form, covering their name, sex, and education. The other 10%, chosen randomly (随机地), were asked to fill in a longer 45-question form. Foreigners had it easier: they only had eight questions to answer.
Citizens’ privacy concern is one of the biggest challenges for the census takers. After years of development, some Chinese aren’t willing to give their personal information to census takers, because they are worried about the safety of their privacy.
Another issue is children born against the family planning policy or the one-child-only policy. Many of them do not have legal identities (合法身份). They could number in the millions.

It may be safer to make a salad on your toilet seat than your kitchen cutting board.
That’s because there is 200 times more germs (细菌) on your cutting board, says Chuck Gerba, a world-famous germ expert at the University of Arizona, US.
When looking at the amount of germs in an average home, Gerba said, researchers have found that the place with the most germs is the kitchen sponge (海绵). “The sponge is a happy home for germs. It’s wet and it’s sucking up food all of the time,” he said. He added that you could squeeze as much as 10 million germs out of one sponge without any difficulty.
Gerba explained that there is a smaller amount of germs inside a home’s toilet bowl after a person flushes (冲洗) than there is in a kitchen sink (水槽).
“That’s why dogs drink out of the toilet. They’re a lot smarter than you think,” he joked.
He said people usually clean their bathroom with cleaning products because they are afraid of getting diseases, but they don’t clean the kitchens with the same effort.
Better cleaning is also needed in the laundry room. He explained that most people only wash their laundry for a short amount of time with cold water. That makes it possible for germs to survive through the wash.
