The younger daughter of former New York Mayor Richard White has moved her wedding from New Year’s Eve to this Thursday so her mother, who has been fighting against cancer for 11 years, can take part in the ceremony, a family spokesman said on Wednesday, Oct, 12, 2013. Elizabeth Lally White, who turns 28 on Thursday, will marry Sam Peterson in Spiaggia, a restaurant on North Michigan Avenue. The reception also will be held at the restaurant, which had been previously scheduled to host the couple’s engagement party on Thursday.
Lally White’s mother, Maggie, 68, was reported to have caught breast cancer in 2002. She had an operation in her leg in April and she was hospitalized twice in the weeks following the procedure for treatment of flu-like symptoms that doctors said were not related to the cancer. Maggie, who has used a walker or a wheelchair during most public appearances in recent years, is well beyond the average survival time for someone with breast cancer.
“As the mayor himself has said, she had a pretty difficult summer.” said Jacquelyn Heard, who served Mayor White’s press secretary for years and followed him to the same international law firm that he joined after leaving office in May. “She was not able to get around the way that she normally would do. This year, she has had quite a few setbacks and they’ve been pretty well documented. Lally White decided to reschedule the wedding so that her mom can participate in the festivities (庆祝活动).” Heard said. Lally White is a doctoral candidate at De-Paul University and plans to work with autistic (孤独症) children, and Sam Peterson works in insurance, Heard said.
Richard and Maggie White married in 1972 and had three children in addition to Lally — Nora, Patrick and Kevin. But Kevin was born with a disease and died in 1981 at 33 months.
21.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Maggie, 68, is recovering now.
B. Maggie caught breast cancer in 2002.
C. The cancer caused some flu-like symptoms on Maggie.
D. Average breast cancer patients lived a life shorter than Maggie.
22. Why did Lally White reschedule her wedding?
A. She was eager to work with autistic children after wedding.
B. She was afraid that her mother couldn’t participate her wedding on New Year’s Eve.
C. Her family will move out of New York.
D. Her mother will accept operation because of her disease.
23. How many children did the former mayor and his wife give birth to?
A. 3.
B. 6.
C. 4.
D. 5.
24. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The family life of former Mayor.
B. The brave wife of former Mayor.
C. The wedding of former Mayor’s daughter.
D. The political life of former Mayor.

Apple’s ipad has been a huge hit among children, with its easy to use interface(界面) and innovative apps.
In fact, researchers say the astonishing rise of the ipad has meant it has now overtaken household names such as McDonalds and Disney to become the number one brand among American 6-12 year olds.
The annual study, conducted by leading youth and family research firm Smarty Pants, ranks more than 250 brands each year. “iPad’s number one status among kids represents the summit of the ‘tablet takeover’—a movement from shared screens and TV network dominance to planned content on personal devices.” Said Wynne Tyree, president of Smarty Pants. “Kids increasingly turn to iPad for games, TV shows, videos, books, homework help and communicating with friends and family.
In the firm’s 2014 study, Apple’s iPad went ahead of kid brands such as McDonald’s and Disney. Kids see the iPad as the all-in-one digital tool, giving them a unique sense of independence, the researchers say.
Tyree notes that iPad’s march to the top has been dramatic. “In just five years, the iPad has risen from ranking 109th to being kid’s favorite brand. Early on, it captured the hearts of teens and middle and upper class families, but iPad is now an indispensable(不可或缺的) part of childhood for the masses.”
On the study iPad was tops with a weighted score of 898 out of 1,000. Disney came at 858, Google’s YouTube 852, McDonald’s 839, iPhone 830 and Apple 829. Digital entertainment overall is seeing an increase among kids and families, with brands such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, Android, and Samsung posting noteworthy increases in the study, a measure of kids’ awareness, popularity, and love for a brand. Along with iPad, these devices and services provide entertainment that is “always on”.
Offering seemingly endless options, tablets and digital content providers are meeting contemporary kids’ needs—with fun and connectivity never more than a tap away.

30. What is the correct ranking according to scores from the study of Smarty Pants?
A. Disney—YouTube—Apple—iPhone—iPad—McDonald’s
B. iPhone—Disney—iPad-- McDonald’s—YouTube-- Apple

At the end of the eighth century, the Scandinavians known as Vikings took to the seas, travelling to areas including Iceland, Greenland, England, Ireland, France, and Russia, and even reaching the shores of America some 500 years before Columbus. The Vikings’ creativity in shipbuilding was central to constructing their empire. Using the great longboat itself bears witness to their outstanding skills in the sea.
Their ships were designed and built with uncommon creativity to serve the Vikings’ purpose. The secret is found in its unique construction. The invention of the longest meant Vikings could travel vast distances over rough open water. In contrasts to modern sailboats, the longboat was joined together with enough spacing so that the boat was flexible. It could bend as it rode over waves flexibly. Unbelievably, simple tools such as axes and hammers were all that carpenters used to construct a ship. Additionally, one kind of longboat could ride high by skimming the water swiftly to transport a crew of about 30. This fast ship had a draft of as little as 20 inches, allowing navigation in extremely shallow water.
While its shallow draft and design of construction made Viking longboat a superior vessel, the seamanship of the Norseman was the most decisive thing in the success of their boats. For example, Vikings navigated by looking at the sky through a crystal, which was known as sunstone. The Vikings’ outstanding talents in ship constructing, coupled with their extraordinary skills as navigators, greatly affected Scandinavia. In turn, through their explorations, the Vikings influenced the rest of the world.
32. What can we learn from the first 2 paragraphs?
A. Vikings’ desire for exploration was essential to the foundation of their empire
B. The unique design of the longboat guarantees its flexibility.
C. Vikings’ longboat resembles modern sailboats in many ways.
D. The procedures and tools required to construct the ship were highly complex.
33. By giving a detailed description of Vikings’ ships in paragraph 2, the author intends to show         .
A. sea voyages were full of dangers in the past
B. shipbuilding used to be a really difficult job.
C. constructing Vikings’ ships was a well-kept secret.
D. Vikings’ ships helped them perform well on voyages.
34. The underlined word “seamanship” in paragraph 3 most nearly means          .
A. the qualities of the sailors
B. the advanced technology
C. the skill in sailing a ship
D. the skill in building a ship
35. The central idea of the passage is that Vikings         .
A. had a deep love for global exploration
B. helped map the known world of their time
C. were excellent shipbuilders and sea voyagers.
D. led European peoples in technological revolution

Although people value intelligence---understanding, reasoning, the ability to learn---they also respect wisdom, or the knowledge and experience that they gain over a lifetime. In some ways, wisdom is like beauty: we value it, we desire it, we know it when we see it, but it is nearly impossible to pin down(确切理解) such a nice quality.     36
1. Working at being social.
Studies show that people who stay connected to others show higher levels of wisdom than those who remain alone. 37    Next time you’re at a party or gathering, single out someone who’s standing alone; and strike up a conversation.
2.   38
Wisdom involves being able to understand all sides of an issue without letting personal feelings get in the way. Owning your mind means realizing that everyone has a life story that influences their actions. During the course of every day, make a note of the issues that annoy you, and take a moment to see them from the other side.
3. Learning how to say “I could be wrong”.
A wise person understands that it is impossible to know everything and that life is likely to take unexpected turns.   39      Admitting that there are times when you could be mistaken will go a long way in strengthening your fame.
4. Reading the news.
40    If you don’t already read a daily paper or news online, start by going through a single front-page article from a major respected news source.
Almost everyone has the potential to become wiser, particularly if you strengthen these habits.
A. Practicing being open-minded.
B. Sharing good news with your friends.
C. But researchers have tried and here's what they’ve found.
D. Recognizing your errors can lead only to even greater wisdom.
E. Make an effort to join a new club, or invite an old friend for coffee.

I’m very glad to receive your email asking for information about the host family we have arranged you to stay with.
Locating in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood, the house was big enough to enable you to have a room of your own. Apart from the convenient public transportation, our private car will make your visits easily. Because all the family members can speak fluently English and have outgoing personalities, I’m sure you will have no trouble communicating with them.
