Nathan,a freshman student at San Marino High School in California,US,doesn’t like doing housework any more than anybody else. But he said doing it made him wonder why hot water worked better than cold water when washing up after dinner, and what made soap a good cleaner. The experiments he designed to figure out these things earned him the top prize at the 2016 Broadcom MASTERS.
MASTERS stands for Math,Applied Science,Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars.Every year, the event brings together 30 middle school students from around the country to share their science projects.
“At first,I thought that my ideas were naive,”the teenager told Student Science.“But when I was presented with this special award,it proved that young inventors can actually deal with real-world problems.”
Inspired by reports of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico,he connected washing dishes to cleaning oil spills.“I decided that I wanted to find a method for cleaning that’s both efficient and environmentally friendly,”Nathan told Student Science. So he created his own setup for measuring surface tension—a scientific term that refers to the tension of a layer of liquid. He ended up learning why soap and hot water are better for cleaning, and a way to remove oil from water.
“Science and math help you understand the world around you.You can learn it from books and teachers, but you can also discover it yourself by doing science projects.”He even plans to sell his setup to schools,so other teens can do his experiment and learn his theory.
When asked his secret to success,he said to keep a science fair project simple at first.“Break down the problem into smaller, manageable steps,so in that way,you will be able to know what you doing and build on your knowledge gradually.”

The modern pizza was originally invented in Naples,Italy, but the word pizza is Greek in origin, derived from the Greek word pēktos meaning solid or clotted. The ancient Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese. The first major innovation that led to flat bread pizza was the use of tomato as a topping. It was common for the poor of the area around Naples to add tomatoes to their yeast-based flat bread, and so the pizza began.
While it is difficult to say for sure who invented the pizza,it is however believed that modern pizza was first made by baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples. In fact,a popular urban legend holds that the archetypal(原型的)pizza,Pizza Margherita, was invented in 1889,when the Royal Palace of Capodimonte asked the Neapolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita.Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pie wrapped in the colors of the Italian flag:red (tomato),green(basil),and white(mozzarella).Supposedly, this kind of pizza was then named after the Queen as Pizza Margherita.
Later, the dish has become popular in many parts of the world:
■The first pizzeria,Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba, was opened in 1830 in Naples.
■In North America, the first pizzeria was opened in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi at 53 Spring Street in New York City.

The warm wet forests have been in existence for 55 million years, and thrived even during glacial periods, allowing for the evolution of an unbelievable diversity of species,Radiocarbon dating(放射性碳年代测定)has revealed trees of 10 centimeter diameter to be more than 300 years old,and some trees over 1,000 years old, indicating that untouched forests can experience unbelievable longevity.
The first human inhabitants are thought to have settled in the Amazon region about 11,200 years ago.European explorers arrived in the 16th century, bringing diseases which traveled faster than the explorers themselves, killing perhaps as many as 90%of the indigenous inhabitants(土著居民).By the late 17th century the Amazon basin was controlled by Portuguese and Spanish explorers.

Password fatigue(疲劳)is the feeling experienced by many people who are required to remember an increasing number of passwords as part of their daily routine, such as to log on to a computer at work, undo a bicycle lock or conduct banking from an ATM.
The increasing importance of information technology and the Internet in employment, finance, recreation and other aspects of people’s lives, and the following introduction of secure deal technology, has led to people accumulating a sudden increase in accounts and passwords.According to a survey of British online-security consultant NTA Monitor, the typical regular computer user has 21 accounts that require a password.
Other things causing password fatigue are:demands that a user create a new password that uses particular pattern of letters, numbers and special characters;demands that the user type the new password twice;blind typing, both when responding to a password immediately and when setting a new password.
Aside from contributing to stress, password fatigue may encourage people to adopt habits that reduce the security of their protected information. For example,an account holder might use the same password for several different accounts, deliberately choose easy-to-remember passwords that are more likely to be solved,or rely on written records of their passwords.
Password fatigue will typically affect users, but can also affect technical departments who manage user accounts as they are constantly resetting passwords. This situation ends up lowering confidence and enthusiasm in both cases.
Some companies are well organized in this respect, and have employed alternative methods or adopted technologies so that a user’s certificates are entered automatically, but others may not focus on ease of use or even worsen the situation by constantly carrying out new applications with their own certification system.
32.What is the main idea of Paragraphs 2?
A.Reasons for password fatigue.
B.Definition of password fatigue.
C.Roles of the Internet in daily life.
D.A survey on regular computer users.
33.What may password fatigue cause people to do?
A.To choose complex passwords.
B.To improve their memory.
C.To use the same passwords.
D.To learn passwords by heart.
34.What can we infer about password fatigue?
A.It may create new accounts.
B.It can be finally solved in future.
C.It can encourage account holders.
D.It will continue to exist for ever.
