随着汉语热、中国文化热在全球兴起，孔子学院迅速成长。在“国家汉办”支持下，二00六年十月，武汉大学与法国巴黎狄德罗第七大学联合创办了巴黎狄德罗第七大学孔子学院，由武汉大学派出教师负责授课，是法国诞生的第一家孔子学院。学院从二00六年十月开始招生，目前有一百四十多名学员，分布在十一个汉语班，两个书法班，一个太极拳班和一个烹饪班。此外，武大副校长周创兵在访问匹兹堡大学期间，双方就孔子学院组成结构和运行模式也达成了一致意见。
据了解，二00四年七月，中国政府宣布将在海外成立一百所孔子学院，孔子学院将开办在亚洲、非洲、欧洲等地区。
